Additional CMS/VLE information

Course Management System (CMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is a software system designed to help teachers by facilitating the management of educational courses for their students, especially by helping teachers and learners with course administration. The system logs statistics and can track the learners' progress, which can be monitored by both teachers and learners. While frequently thought of as primarily tools for distance education, they are most often used to supplement the face-to-face classroom.

Components of these systems usually include templates for content pages, discussion forums, chat, quizzes and exercises such as multiple-choice, true/false and one-word-answer. Teachers fill in these templates and then release them for learners to use. New features in these systems include blogs , RSS Feeds, Collaborated Workshops and Online Chat. Services generally provided include access control, provision of e-learning content, communication tools, and administration of the user groups.

With CMS/VLE systems sustained, dramatic growth across the nation, online learning is here not only to stay but also to drive innovation in both core curriculum and professional development areas. Encompassing everything from a single Web site that links to resources (such as Virtual Learning Resources Center) to just-in-time lessons, a total school experience, workplace training, or part-or full-time online courses for students and educators, virtual learning's adaptability is proving itself well-suited to the 21st century.

by Admin User - Saturday, 17 November 2007, 01:44 PM

To edit content as a Course Creator or Teacher login with the user name and password provided by us. After you have successfully logged in click the grey "turn editing on" button near the top right. When editing mode is enabled you can add various types of learning material to the system through the two available drop down menu's entitled "Add a resource" and "Add an activity". The software allows you to import complete SCORM/AICC learning packages and many other types of learning resources and activities. These editing functions are also available in each course created. Every course created can be exported as a compliant SCORM/AICC package in .zip format which can then can be stored in a course repository and shared among teachers and administration. A central repository can be created and all courses and related learning materials can be stored and shared among collaborating schools, teachers and instructors. The possibilities are endless. The software we use is a leading "open source" CMS/VLE system and is constantly being improved upon with new features and modules to provide a more enhanced learning environment for teachers and students. Browse the administration menu on the left to see more of the software's functionality avaiable to teachers. (For security reasons all sensitive teacher administration functions have been disabled)

Growth of e-learning
by Admin User - Saturday, 17 November 2007, 01:42 PM
E-Learning Course Management Systems OntarioGrowth of e-learning
By 2005, more than 3.2 million students were participating in on-line learning at institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada. Many higher education, for-profit institutions, now offer on-line classes. By contrast, only about half of private, non-profit schools offer them. The Sloan report, based on a poll of academic leaders, says that students generally appear to be at least as satisfied with their on-line classes as they are with traditional ones. Private Institutions may become more involved with on-line presentations as the cost of instituting such a system decreases. Properly trained staff must also be hired to work with students on-line. These staff members must be able to not only understand the content area, but also be highly trained in the use of the computer and Internet. Online education is increasing.
